Three new and still-fermenting businesses are preparing to open and to take full advantage of a new state law allowing craft brewers to offer samples from their tasting rooms and to sell directly to the public.

The Dayton Beer Co., 912 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering, will be the first to open: It is scheduled to pour its first craft brews for the public in its tasting room May 17, according to owner and brewmaster Pete Hilgeman.

Ohio Department of Commerce say the new law that took effect March 22 and which relaxed regulations on microbreweries, brew pubs and craft distilleries will trigger growth and expansion in an emerging industry, promote tourism, create jobs, generate tax revenues, and create new demand for Ohio-grown grains and other agricultural products.

At least eight small breweries under development have applied for licenses from the commerce department’s Division of Liquor Control since Jan. 1, and more are expected, commerce department officials said.

“I think this is fantastic for Ohio,” Rick Armon, the author of “Ohio Breweries” who also writes “The Beer Blog” on the Akron Beacon Journal’s website, said of the new state law.

“This will open up whole new markets in beer tourism in the state.”

In addition to the Dayton Beer Co. that will make its debut next week, the two microbreweries under development in the Dayton area include:

Toxic Brew Co., the brew pub coming to 431 E. Fifth St. in the Oregon Historic District, recently won a pivotal ruling from the Dayton Landmark Commission to build a patio in front of the brew pub and is moving toward an early summer opening.

“We got over a big hurdle and got our outside design approved,” said Shane Juhl, Toxic Brew’s general manager and brewmaster.

The brewery’s fermenters are in place, and other equipment is due to be installed in about a week.

“We are hoping to start brewing by the end of May and have a soft opening by the end of June,” Juhl said.

The Vitruvian Brew Co., at 305 Walnut St. in the Millworks in Yellow Springs, is brewing some test batches now and navigating permit and license issues.

“We hope to have production in full swing by midsummer, and have beer on the shelves by mid- or late summer,” said Shane Creepingbear, who owns the microbrewery with his wife, Jacqui.

When it opens, the microbrewery will have a tasting room from which visitors can view the production line, and will sell its brews by the glass, bottle and in larger take-home containers, Creepingbear said.

State officials have pointed to the Ohio wine industry as a model for potential tourism growth in the craft beer and distillery industries — and in some cases, wineries are seeking to capitalize on the popularity of craft beers themselves. At least two Ohio wineries — Valley Vineyards in Morrow in Warren County and Chalet Debonne Vineyards in Madison in northeast Ohio — have launched microbreweries within the wineries.

Valley Vineyards’ venture into the beer market has been warmly received by its customers, who consumed 275 gallons of Cellar Dwellers brew at a Feb. 21 unveiling at the winery, according to brewmaster Steve Shaw. Beer sales in the first two months tripled projections, Shaw said.

At the Dayton area’s newest microbrewery in Kettering, the Dayton Beer Co. “is in full brewing mode,” owner-brewmaster Hilgeman said. He is expecting to offer samples of five of its year-round brews — Blonde Ale, Hefeweizen, Pale Ale, IPA and Porter — during opening weekend May 17-19. The results of the appeal could affect whether Bill Parcells comes out of retirement to take over as interim coach while his former offensive assistant and protege is suspended.
Parcells has said he would consider coaching the Saints if asked. At a spring training game in Jupiter, Fla., on Friday, Parcells declined to answer questions about the possibility.
"I know better than that," Parcells said.
